Being the folky background-drummer I am, loving the mellow acoustic stuff and playing with people like Tessa (Luwten) and Pitou -who both in their own way have a very contemporary approach in their writing, singing and playing- I sometimes really have to dig deep to come up with the right drum parts to their songs. People like them have unknowingly challenged me to start listening to other stuff.
So I came across Emilie Nicolas and her song ‘Dark Matter’ from her latest album ‘Tranquille Emile’. The challenge for me lies in making the hybrid (electronic/acoustic) thing work. Acoustic drums in electronic productions, maintaining the littlest nuances and whispers.
This ‘song without drums’ was a tough one. This is take 10 or something. I think I got it.
